Mathcad and Economic Debate

20/08/2010

Associate Professor Steve Keen at the University of Western Sydney has made a major impact on economic debate in recent years. All of his work has been done using Mathcad.

You can use Mathcad equations to solve just about any math problem you can think of, symbolically or numerically. By combining equations, text and graphics in a single worksheet, Mathcad makes it easy to keep track of the most complex calculations. This simplifies and streamlines the documentation and publishing of your work.

"I use Mathcad in two main ways", Dr Keen explained "for statistical analysis and presentation, and for constructing dynamic models."

Dr Keen publishes a monthly newsletter called Debtwatch, which warns of the dangers of excessive private debt. The newsletter is written in Mathcad, and makes use of Mathcad's very flexible programming language to import data from a wide range of statistical sources. Dr Keen then puts Mathcad's graphing capabilities to work to make this information visually compelling.

Debtwatch has now become very influential in the Australian economic debate, and Mathcad's power and flexibility has been essential here. No other program could allow so rapid a turnaround from analysis to argument.

He also uses Mathcad to model dynamic systems, such as a model of credit money creation that goes well beyond the textbook model of the "money multiplier". Here Mathcad's combination of a natural display of mathematics, and logical as well as numeric programming, has been invaluable.

"Using Mathcad's programming and symbolic engine, I've been able to enter a matrix that records flows between bank accounts in a way that any accountant would recognise--it's basically double entry book-keeping. Then from this very natural interface I automatically derive a set of differential equations to be simulated using the Odesolve block. The programs that achieve this are almost embarrassingly simple, and yet very powerful."

"It's this blend of analytic power and a very natural expression of mathematical logic that makes Mathcad so unbeatable. I expect that I could have done all this in any number of other programs, but the programming would have been far harder to achieve, far more difficult to interpret later, and the presentation of the results would have necessitated exporting to another program to format text, graphs and equations properly. In Mathcad, I can do it all in one place."

"I also find that Mathcad's brilliant equation editor makes it possible for me to develop the logic of a mathematical argument in Mathcad faster and more accurately than I ever could on paper, and then almost instantly test the idea out. There's simply no other program like it. If I found myself wrecked on a desert isle--or the computing equivalent, having to choose just one program out of all those I know--then Mathcad would be it."

Steve Keen is a long term Hearne customer, publisher of Debtwatch and Debunking Economics, as well as a regular guest on many TV programs.

Hearne Scientific Software is the ISO Quality Assured trainer and distributor for Mathcad in Australia and New Zealand.

GKN Revolves Around Aerospace Calculations

03/03/2008

GKN Aerospace Engineering Services Pty Ltd, Australia’s leading aerospace design services organisation, offers a full range of engineering and design services to the aerospace and defence markets. Engineers provide calculations and designs of structures for customers aimed at ensuring safety, performance and manufacturability. These services range from the supply of engineers to the execution of complete design packages.

GKN Aerospace Engineering Services needed an engineering calculation environment that could combine the simplicity of a word processor with visual diagrams of equations, so customers could comprehend design principles and make amendments to calculations if required during development.

Mathcad is a visual design environment that allows engineers from all industries to draw from a variety of data sources during the design phase of a product and document all mathematical formulas and calculations.

Mathcad version 14 is used at GKN Aerospace Engineering Services by stress engineers, who produce calculations and product designs that are provided to customers to ensure designs meet performance requirements and calculations are free of errors. A key element of this process is the ability to capture the rationale of complicated equations.

Mathcad allows engineers at GKN to provide hard-copy calculation sheets, as well as digital copy files that can be shared with customers. GKN's customers benefit from Mathcad digital files, because information can be transferred easily and calculations can be modified if needed.

The hard copy is critical in the aerospace industry as it forms a part of contract documents and in all cases it is inspected by a validation organisation, such as, the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. Once the analysis is complete, the second phase is to validate the calculation to make sure there are no errors. This involves complete recalculation to validate the original analysis.

Mathcad has also saved time on training programs. Graduates coming into the company bring the knowledge of how to use it with them, as Mathcad is used extensively in universities.

"We greatly benefit from the ease of formulating industry-standard stress analysis; the literal viewing of formulae; explicit unit management (which is especially useful when moving between projects, e.g., from a European SI-based system to a US Imperial-based system); the ability to vectorise calculations to encompass a range of different load cases; the ability to interface with other applications, such as MS Excel; and the capability to form simple iterative solutions to problems that previously were solved using cumbersome graphical methods. " - Australian Engineers, GKN Aerospace Engineering Services Pty Ltd.

All Mathcad licensing and support for GKN Aerospace Engineering Services Pty Ltd is handled by Hearne Scientific Software Pty Ltd.

boxshot

Mathcad 14.0 is now available in Australia and New Zealand. This new version extends integration with Pro/ENGINEER and Improves Calculation Power and Clarity.

Since PTC, the Product Development Company, acquired Mathsoft in April 2006, it has focused on making the broad capabilities of the Mathcad technology more widely available to customers operating across geographic boundaries. Mathcad 14.0 expands the ability of PTC’s customers to solve pressing engineering calculation needs and improves the associated documentation of these calculations throughout the product development process.

Mathcad 14.0 delivers improved calculation power and clarity through new worksheet analysis functions, inline numeric evaluation enhancements, and enhanced symbolics. This will help users to derive formulas, demonstrate process and document engineering reasoning. Specific enhancements to the Mathcad 14.0 mathematic solvers will allow users to solve and document a broader range of engineering design problems.

Engineering calculations are critical to the process of designing and developing products, which today is often a globally distributed process. With Mathcad 14.0, PTC now provides full Unicode support and will soon offer the product in nine languages. New languages will include Italian, Spanish, Korean, and both Traditional and Simplified Chinese. Expanded language support in Mathcad 14.0 will enable geographically dispersed teams to solve and document calculations in their local language which ultimately improves efficiencies by increasing speed and accuracy as well as reducing potential errors that may occur from language translation.

As a long-time user of Mathcad software, SkyCross is particularly pleased with the additional capabilities delivered with Mathcad 14.0, said Dr. Chris Morton, CEO, SkyCross. The additional language support and continued integration with Pro/ENGINEER will enable us to easily extend this software into our product design processes. We look forward to continue working with PTC as it delivers the technology we require to optimise our product development systems.

Highlights of the enhancements in Mathcad 14.0 include:

  • New ODE solvers including a state space solver and support for the Adams-Bashforth ODE method for more trouble-free, higher precision answers

The integration between Mathcad and Pro/ENGINEER is a bi-directional link between the two applications. Users of these solutions can easily associate any Mathcad file with a Pro/ENGINEER part or assembly using the analysis feature in Pro/ENGINEER. Critical values calculated in Mathcad can be mapped to parameters and dimensions in the CAD model to drive the geometric design. Parameters from a Pro/ENGINEER model can also be input into Mathcad for downstream engineering design calculations. The integration offers dynamic updates to calculations and the CAD drawing when parameters are changed. Additionally, Mathcad-driven Pro/ENGINEER designs can now be validated using Pro/ENGINEER Mechanica structural, thermal, fatigue and mechanism analysis solutions.

Mathcad 14.0 reinforces our commitment to develop products that enable organisations to optimise their product development processes, said James Heppelmann, executive vice president and chief product officer, PTC. With its multiple language support, additional engineering calculation capabilities and integration with Pro/ENGINEER, Mathcad 14.0 allows organisations with geographically dispersed engineers to leverage critical engineering calculations that drive product design models and standardise best practices.
