Citavi helps you with all research tasks, from searching for sources, to knowledge organization and task planning, to creating a final publication.

Citavi does everything normal reference management programs do – but better. Citavi does more than manage citation information. It makes it possible for users to pull out the most important ideas from texts and then combine them in a new way – in a thesis, paper, or report.

Search the World

Explore Over 4800 Resources

Citavi provides you access to world-class databases and library catalogs. You can even use each online resource‘s specific search options — a feature exclusive to Citavi.
Search databases from major information providers (EBSCO, Ovid, ProQuest, Elsevier, Thomson Reuters, etc.); in WorldCat, the world’s largest online catalog; in university, national, and combined library catalogs, and in bookseller websites such as Amazon.

Search Your Library

Can you search your library catalog from within Citavi? We continually add additional online resources and gladly accept suggestions for new ones.

Check Availability

Citavi saves call numbers for items in your library. When you import references from other sources, Citavi can check if they are available in your library or through interlibrary loan.

Add References

By Hand

Citavi's 35 reference types help you capture the bibliographic information relevant to each of your sources.

Automatically

Just enter an ISBN number, DOI name, or PubMed ID, and Citavi retrieves the bibliographic information for you, along with the cover art, abstract, and keywords, if available.

With a Bar Code Scanner

Scan ISBN bar codes with a bar code scanning device or smartphone app. Citavi searches for the bibliographic information.

With the Picker

If you find information online, you can use the Picker to add references with just a click.

Citavi Pickers are available for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat. Pickers are free of charge and are automatically installed at the same time as Citavi.

Save the current Web page as a new reference with just a click. Moreover, the Picker detects every ISBN number and DOI name on a Web page and places the Citavi icon next to it    . Just click and Citavi retrieves the bibliographic information from the Internet.

From PDFs

You can import a folder of PDFs and Citavi automatically adds each file as a reference and looks up the bibliographic information.

From Databases

Quickly import references from other reference management programs (EndNote, RefWorks, etc.) and from Web-based resources in RIS, EndNote Tagged, and BibTeX formats. Naturally you can export to these formats as well.

Without Duplicates

When importing references, Citavi checks to see if they are already in your project and identifies duplicates.

Manage References

Group References

Groups can help you organize your work or sort references in a way unrelated to their contents. For example, you could create the groups "Recommended reading" and "Special topics". Or you could use a group to designate that certain references have already been used in another project.

Save Online Search Results and Imports

Each time you import references, Citavi saves the references in a group so you can view them again later on.

Save Searches

Are you always looking for the same information in your project? By saving your searches you never have to enter the same search twice.

Integrate PDFs and Other Documents

Find Full Text

Let Citavi find and download the full text of journal and newspaper articles from the Internet.

Take a Closer Look

Use the preview to view nearly all types of files: PDFs, Web pages, Word and Writer documents, images, videos, and presentations.

Choose Where to Save Documents

To read your documents on a tablet or other device, save them in the folder for a synchronization service, such as DropBox.

Save Webpages as PDFs

You can tell Citavi to save a webpage that's open in the preview as a PDF. This PDF is also saved in the project folder.

With Citavi, you don't just gather Information as you do with other reference management programs.

With Citavi, you create knowledge

Evaluate the texts you're working with, note down your own comments and ideas, and keep track of questions, definitions, hypotheses, results, etc.

Annotate your PDFs

Add Passages from the Preview

You can easily evaluate texts in the Preview. Just highlight text and click to copy a passage as a quotation - complete with its bibliographic information.

Avoid Plagiarism

Unattributed quotations never "just happen" if you use Citavi.

Scan Quotations

If you're working with a lot of printed materials and don't like to type, you can use a scanning pen. Speech recognition software, digital photos, and flatbed scanners are other options.

Organize Knowledge

Citavi offers something extraordinary: The Knowledge Organizer

Cultivate and Organize

Add direct and indirect quotations, comments, summaries, and your own thoughts directly to Citavi. This knowledge base grows in value with each new quotation and thought you save and is always at hand for future projects.

Citavi gives you two tools for organizing and structuring your collected knowledge: conventional keywording and a hierarchical category system - another Citavi exclusive. Both keywords and categories can be changed at any time.

Structure Your Work

The category system makes it easy to systematically structure research proposals and publications and is especially useful for outlining a term project, thesis, or dissertation.

Create a Compilation

No more writer’s block! Saving or printing a list of your quotations and thoughts gives you a quick overview of how far along you are in your project.

Plan Tasks

Also one-of-a-kind: Citavi's Task Planner

Forget Nothing

You can add tasks to each reference: examine and assess, verify bibliographic information, etc. You can also link tasks to text passages in a PDF if you want to discuss a point with your team members or search for additional information on a point the author made.

Save Time

Before you leave for the library, let Citavi print a task list, sorted by call number so you don't make an unnecessary trip.
Just click to order books online from an online bookseller or the bookstore around the corner.

Plan Projects

With Citavi you can define your own task types for individual and group work and set project goals.

Citavi 5 for DBServer

Citavi for DBServer is primarily meant for larger organizations with special technical and organizational needs.

Central Location for Projects

When you use Citavi for DBServer, your Citavi projects are saved on an SQL server. The Citavi projects are created by the database owner. The database owner can also grant this permission to another user.

The files linked to the project (PDF files, cover images, etc.) are saved in a folder on a network drive. All Citavi users should have access to this folder.

Easy License Management

Citavi for DBServer makes it possible to work with concurrent licenses. This means that you no longer have to worry about which team member is using which license or have to transfer licenses if a Citavi user leaves the organization.

Different Permissions for Each User
