• Activating a Prism license

    Overview of activation

    Starting with Prism 5.04 (Windows) or 5.0d (Mac), Prism must be activated after installing.  The following activation process is very straightforward and usually takes less than a minute. 

    When you launch Prism for the first time the registration/activation process begins. The instructions below are for Windows, the screens are quite similar for Mac. See here for short "Install and activate" YouTube video.


    The activation steps

    Step 1: Enter your serial number and click Next Step.

    Step 2: Prism will display a dialog with the Machine ID for your computer.  This Machine ID is generated by Prism to uniquely identify a particular computer. This value does not match any value used by the operating system or other software.  You will also see a button labeled 'Continue', 'Next Step', or 'Enter Activation Code'.  That is the button you click after registering Prism in the next step.  The labeling of the button depends on the version you are installing and the operating system.


    Step 3: At the same time Prism displays the dialog box in step 2, it opens a registration form in your web browser. If the browser doesn't open automatically, simply point your browser to www.graphpad.com/register. If you have to launch the form manually (which is rare), you'll need to enter your serial number and the machine ID. If Prism successfully points your browser to that page, the values are filled in automatically.

    Step 4: Complete the following form with your email address and click the Submit button at the bottom.



    Note: When you have correctly submitted the information on this form, you will see a message that says: "Your license has been activated".

    Step 5: An email will be sent to you that includes your activation code. It will come from orders@graphpad.com with the subject line, "GraphPad Prism activation code". Please be patient as email can take some time to arrive.  You may also want to check your junk/spam folder as the activation email may inadvertently be flagged as spam.

    This activation code allows a particular Prism serial (license) number to run on a particular computer.


    Step 6: Return to the Prism activation window. From the screen in step 2 above, click Next step.  


    Step 7: Copy the activation code from the email, and paste it into the text field to complete the activation and check the box to agree with the license agreement.  Prism is now ready to run.



    Q: The activation process did not work. How can I troubleshoot?
    A: Start by reading a list all the problems GraphPad is aware of. If the answer is not found, email support@graphpad.com and the developer will be happy to help.


    Q: How often do I need to activate?
    A: The activation is a one-time process.  (If you replace or reformat your hard drive, you may need to activate again.)


    Q: Does Prism "talk" to the GraphPad server?
    A: Starting with Prism 6.06/6.0g, Prism periodically communicates over the network in order to perform license validation. As Prism communicates over standard HTTP(port 80) and HTTPS(port 443) protocols, extra network configuration is not typically required. Prism needs to access: https://licenses.graphpad.com.


    Q: What if I change the hardware on my computer (i.e. change the video card or hard drive)?
    A: If the change is small, Prism will work fine. If the change is large, Prism may incorrectly determine that it is running on a different computer and ask you to activate again.


    Q: Is there an inactivation procedure?
    A: Often the need to migrate to a new computer happens when the first computer stops working. If this happens, contact support@graphpad.com and the develoepr will walk you through the process of installing and activating on a new computer.

  • How can I find my serial number?

    A serial number for Prism 7 looks vaguely like this:   GPS-1123456-ABCD-1234

    When you run Prism for the first time on a computer, you'll need to enter the full serial number, which you'll receive when you purchase Prism. 

    Include your serial number when you request technical or upgrade support. If GraphPad Prism is installed and has been run at least once on your computer, it is easy to find the main part of your serial number. 

    1. Launch the program.
    2. Drop the "Help" menu (Windows) or the "Prism" menu (Macintosh OS X).
    3. Choose "About...".

    The About dialog will show part of the serial number like this:  GPS-1123456-####-####  The digits shown are enough for us to uniquely identify your serial number (when you request support). However, these digits are not sufficient to install Prism on a new computer, or to order an upgrade via self-service. For this, you need the full serial number with nothing masked by # symbols.

    With Prism 6 and later, you can also see your Prism machine ID in the About dialog.

    If you can no longer run the program, send an email message to support@graphpad.com. Include the name and address of the registered owner, and the program for which you need the serial number. Details such as the order number or date will help too.

  • How can I transfer my license to a new computer?

    For Prism 8:

    With a Prism individual license (either a personal subscription or a perpetual license):
    Write to support@graphpad.com with your Prism serial number and the developer can help transfer your license to your replacement computer. 

    If you've activated under an annual Prism group subscription license:
    Contact your software/license administrator for assistance (group licenses are distributed internally). 

    For Prism 6 & 7:

    You'll first need to make sure that Prism on your old computer is updated to the latest release (6.07/6.0h). This latest release allows the developer to remotely deactivate Prism, which will free up an activation for the new computer. To update, while running Prism, drop the Help menu and choose Check For Updates.

    Once you have updated to the current release, and when you are ready to install on the new computer, just write to support@graphpad.com with your serial number and the developer will permanently deactivate Prism from the old computer and send you a new download link so you can install Prism on the new computer.

  • How can I update or upgrade?

    Please determine your Prism license type and current version. You must also have software installation privileges on your computer in order to install an update.

    • How do I find my Prism version? Launch Prism and go to Help > About Prism (Windows) or Prism > About Prism (Mac).
    • How do I get privileges to install software updates on my computer? Many organizations restrict the ability of end-users to install software. Please consult with your organization's IT Administrator or IT Support Desk.
    • Upgrading Licenses? Your license allows updates to minor version numbers only. For example, if you purchased Prism 6 perpetual, you can only update to any newer Prism 6 version (e.g. Prism 6.1), but not to Prism 7 or later.
