• Calculating statistics on a row-by-row basis

Use the matrix operator along with the statistics command and enter 0 for both the starting and ending row . For example, the formula c5 = mean([0:0, 1:4]) calculates the mean for each individual row in columns 1 through 4 and stores the results in column 5.

In version 4.x, the formula c5 = mean(1:4) performs the same operation.

  • Changing legend text

To change the text in the legend, use the Text tool. You can double-click any text item you want to edit.

  • Displaying the column numbers

For the data windows that are already open, click the  button in that particular data window to have this area of the data window expand to make the column numbers visible.

Select the Show Column Numbers option in the Preferences dialog so that the column numbers are displayed for any new data windows that are opened or created.

  • If you have problems with KaleidaGraph accepting your authorisation code

    - Make sure you use upper case letters.

    - If your code contains a 0, it is a zero, not the letter O. None of the codes contain the letter O.

    - Double check the characters in the code. It easy to mistake K for X and A for 4, for example.

    - Type the code yourself - do not try copying the code from your order confirmation and pasting it in. You can copy the code, but you cannot include anything before or after the code itself.

    - You can enter the code with or without the dashes.

The serial number for your program should be located on the back cover of the CD case. If you purchased KG electronically, it will be on your order confirmation, listed in the Digital Rights. If this is an update, your serial number has not changed. The authorization code should either be inside the CD case or in the order confirmation.

  • KaleidaGraph and OS 10.7 or 10.8?

You need to use v4.1.3 under these operating systems. Earlier versions of KaleidaGraph 4.1 have problems under Lion and Mountain Lion that were fixed in v4.1.3.

Version 4.1 is the first version that includes a universal version of the application. The installer detects the processor and installs the correct version for your computer.

There is a free v4.1.3 patch available on our downloads page (www.synergy.com/downloads.htm) for users who have v4.x. If you are moving to a new computer, you can copy your KaleidaGraph 4 folder to the new computer and then run the v4.1.3 update.

If you have v3.6 or earlier, you need to order an update. If you order a physical update, you will get a CD that performs a complete installation. The electronic update would need to see an earlier version on the computer.

  • KaleidaGraph and the Intel Macs

Versions 3.6 and 4.0 work fine on the Intel Macs, but not under OS 10.7 or later.

Version 4.1 is the first version that is native for the Intel Macs, but you need to use v4.1.3 to avoid any problems.

  • Notes on running the v4.1 updaters

If the updater is taking a long time to run, disconnect any external or network drives and try running it again.

Make a note of your serial number before running the updater. You will need to enter it the first time you launch v4.1.

Mac updater - If you are updating v4.1.x, you need to click No when the updater asks if you are updating v4.0 and Yes when asked if you want to re-install v4.1.3.

Vista/Win 7 users - The updater may find multiple license files on the computer. Try using the license file in the Users area first (within the VirtualStore directory). If you try using the one in the Program Files/KaleidaGraph 4.0 directory, it may tell you that a valid license file was not found. The security features in Vista prevent the updater from using this file.

  • Out of Memory error in the Windows version

Versions 3.09 and earlier have problems on computers with a large amount of RAM installed (512 MB or more). You need to get an update to the current version to fix this problem.

  • The license file is locked! Please correct this before continuing

This error message could be displayed if KaleidaGraph was installed using Administrator privileges but the person trying to personalize the program does not have Administrator privileges. You need to log in as the Administrator and personalize the program to avoid this error.

  • To remove the frame around the legend

Use the last icon in the toolbox. The icon is divided into two sections. The part on the right is represented by up and down arrows. If you click to the left, a pop-up menu appears which contains different line styles. Choose None from the bottom of this menu.

  • Unable to ungroup a plot that is copied and pasted under OS 10.6 or imported into Office 2008

As of OS 10.6, the PICT format has been deprecated by Apple. When an application copies a PICT file to the Clipboard, it is converted to a TIFF or PDF file by the OS. You may not be able to paste an image into another program and ungroup the image.

One workaround is to save the PICT file to disk and import this into the application. This will not work in Office 2008 or later. Office converts these images upon import as well.

You can also use the Print command to create a PDF image of the plot. This can be imported into programs like EazyDraw and Illustrator and be ungrouped.
